Born in Newmarket on 8th August 1890 [Newmarket 3b:499] to William and Elizabeth BROOKS (née MOORE) of Grosvenor Yard, Newmarket.

1891 census...William BROOKE [7 months] was at Grosvenor Yard, Newmarket with his father William[39], a cutler; his mother Elizabeth [40] and sisters Susan [16] and Ada [4] and brother George [12]. All except William junior born in London.

1901 census...Willie BROOKS [10] was now with his parents and sister Ada (later Mrs FULLER) were on Exning Road, Newmarket. His father was now "born in Braintree".

1911 census...Unable to find William junior, he may well have already gone to Canada. Possibly he was the Wm Brooks, labourer, who sailed from Liverpool to Quebec on 8th May 1908 on the SS Victorian. His parents had moved to Market Street, Newmarket.


Passed fit at Val Cartier, Quebec, Canada on 27th August 1914, enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 21st September 1914 at Val Cartier. Labourer by trade. National Archives of Canada Ref:RG150, accession 1992-93/166, Box 1109-20
He was 5 feet 9 inches (175.3 cm) tall, chest 34" to 37" (86.4 to 94 cm), blue eyes, black hair, Church of England.
He arrived in France on 12th February 1915 and joined 8th Battalion in the field. Admitted to 2 Canadian Field Ambulance with influenza on 7th March 1916, rejoining unit on 12th March. On 8th June 1916 he suffered concussion and shell shock and was admitted to 17 Casualty Clearing Station, 14th June 1916, then admitted to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne - N.Y.D. (Not Yet Diagnosed) on 16th June 1916.
William died of meningitis at Boulogne, No.13 General Hospital
